Jonathan Papelbon

The 2011-2012 Major League Baseball season ended in disappointing fashion for the Boston Red Sox when they squandered a 9 game lead and failed to make the postseason.  The off-season was sure to bring big changes for the team, and to begin, the shock waves from this historic collapse cost manager Terry Francona his job.  Then the next bombshell dropped, general manager Theo Epstein left the Red Sox to join the Chicago Cubs.  Then, this past Friday afternoon then first big move of free agency was announced, closer Jonathan Papelbon is taking his river dance to Philadelphia.

The news of Papelbon’s departure saddened me.  Papelbon had been my favorite Red Sox player since he made his Major League debut in July of 2005.  His intensity and craziness on and off the field endeared him to me from the beginning, reminding me of myself.  Some of my favorite memories of the Red Sox involve him.   Who could ever forget him telling David Letterman that his dog ate the ball from the last out of the World Series, or the images of him river dancing after they won in 2007?

My family is from Philly and are all Phillies’ fans, and while the Red Sox are my first love, the Phillies are my National League team.  I am sad to see Papelbon go, but I am happy to see that Jonathan Papelbon is at least going to a team that I like and wish him the best of luck.  He should put up great numbers going from the AL East to the National league.
